The Figurativas is an international annual competition for figurative art organised by the Fundació de les Arts i els Artistes in the Mueso Europeu d’Art Modern in Barcelona. The foundation was created in 2005 with the objective to support and defend contemporary figurative art and artists.
I’m pleased that my sculpture Diogenes and her mind has been selected by the jury and will be on display in the museum from September 22.
The inauguration will take place on Friday the 22nd 20.00-23.00 in Museu Europe d’Art Modern on Career de la Barra de Ferro 5, in Barcelona.
The sculpture “Diogenes and her mind” depicts a life size sculpture of a woman balancing an accumulation of objects symbolising the demons of her mind. Its about the complex relationship we all have with our minds. How we are all possessed by our thoughts and how we must learn to balance its weight and learn to observe the mess from a distance to live in harmony with ourselves and our surroundings.
“The idea to make Diogenes arrived one day when I found a chair on the street and brought
it back to my studio. I often collect interesting and useful objects from the street and it made
me reflect about Diogenes syndrome. Aren’t we all hoarders in a way? Carrying around mind
trash that we don’t even remember when, where or why we collected. Thoughts imposed by
society, inherited opinions, feelings that has been left undealt with.
Diogenes was also a philosopher who didn’t have this problem, as my muse Mar who is the
most open minded person I’we met and who posed for the sculpture.
The final piece is a self portrait, a female Diogenes partly weighed down by and entangled
in her trash demon, partly playing with it, in a meditative state. Perhaps even enjoying the
struggle while finding a way to balance.”
